Today's comic was a response to an article that appeared in last Friday's New York Times concerning Pickens' monumental donation. You can read the article here.

As of Tuesday, the university's public forums have concluded with the expected result: the university is going to continue with their plans to build an athletic village on the homes of Stillwater's citizens, in spite of objections from virtually the entire Stillwater community and its elected officials.
Our suspicions regarding these forums have been confirmed. They were nothing more than a PR move by the university's administration—an attempt on their part to appear as if they were listening to the community and were willing to consider new ideas when, in reality, nothing was farther from the truth. As Hank Moore said at Tuesday's meeting, “You need and you want a spirit of cooperation, but the university doesn't have the integrity.”
Moore asked Schmid a simple question: "Are we supposed to trust you?" Should the OSU family be able to trust their president? Yes. Can they? Not this one. In these past few months Schmid has further deteriorated what little existing respect this community had for him. Stillwater's citizens fear him, OSU's faculty and student body despise him. (In class last week I actually overheard a conversation between two students about how they were envious of OU—not because of their football team, but because of their capable and respectable president!)
In truth, we never expected OSU to change their plans. They were made with complete disregard for this community; why would they now be willing to listen to our concerns? Still, there remains one hope. On March 3, the Board of Regents will have another meeting. It is important that they know exactly how this community feels about the university's plans! They are the last remaining chance for this plan to be changed.
So, with that in mind, here's how to get free Boone State merch. Write a letter to the board and mail it to them. Then send us a copy of your letter along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. As a thanks, we'll send you a handful of stickers. If you need help with the letter, visit the I Want to Help! section of our site. Keep in mind that the meeting is in one week, so try to get the letters to the regents ASAP! If you've already sent them one, send them another one to remind them that the plan is still bad for Stillwater.
We appreciate your help, and we appreciate the support of those of you who have been in contact with us over the months. We'll be back with new comics on Monday. In the meantime, write letters! And then send a copy to Garrett: 11008 Jollyville Rd. Apt. 109 // Austin, TX 78759.

In light of recent news, we have revised Friday's comic. See here and here.

Boone State Responds to Schmidly's January 18th Student Address
On Wednesday, January 18, President Schmidly addressed the SGA in order to emphasize that OSU's master plan deals with more than athletics. "Despite what you've heard, this is more than an athletic plan,” Schmidly said. According to Thursday's O'Colly, he claimed that the plan calls for $282.8 million to be spent on academics and $255 million on athletics. Those numbers clearly indicate that there will be more academic spending in the master plan than there will be athletic spending. But are those numbers accurate? Visit OSU's Web site and decide for yourself.
In their academic totals, they included $20 million for a parking garage, which is a bit confusing to us. How is a parking garage an academic facility? Will there be classes held in this parking garage? Will the garage include research facilities? If we move this total to the infrastructure category, where the other parking facilities are listed, that brings the academic total to $262.8 million. (There is also $15 million listed for a Hospitality Management Program building, which also doesn't seem very academic to us, but we'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that.)
Also, for some reason the $35 million necessary to acquire the land for the Athletic Village is included in the infrastructure total instead of the athletics total. How odd. If we move that total to where it belongs, the new athletics total becomes $290 million. That makes Boone State 's official total $290 million for athletics, and $262.8 million for academics. Hmmm…
We are excited about what this master plan could mean for OSU and Stillwater, both academically and athletically. The positive changes that the new facilities will bring will help create a more promising future for both. That said, we expect a little more honesty and integrity from the administration regarding how the money is going to be spent. If they are going to spend more money on athletics than academics, they should be prepared to admit so. Dr. Schmidly said that in the past OSU's numbers for athletics fundraising have been “beyond pathetic.” Maybe so. We think that having the lowest paid professors in the Big XII is even more pathetic.
Love ya Schmid.

PLEASE WRITE LETTERS! The board of regents is meeting one week from today. If you are concerned about the university's actions regarding land acquisition and the athletic village, please take a few moments to write a letter. You can even download a form letter to help you get started. If you are a student, faculty member, or concerned citizen, let your voice be heard, and encourage your friends to do the same. If you are a Stillwater home owner, remember that the outcome of this decision will affect the way the university deals with future land acquisitions.
Thanks,
B.S.
